Marine Sacrificial Anode

Boat anodes are also called sacrificial blocks or sacrificial anodes because they wear away quicker due to the fast rate of corrosion. They essentially ‘sacrifice’ themselves by corroding faster rather than your boat's metal, with the aim of preserving your metal parts for longer. Failure to replace the anodes may lead to these parts corroding faster, in turn warranting their costly replacement.

Advantages of Marine Sacrificial Anode

01/

Corrosion Protection:These anodes are made of a more reactive metal than the metal they protect, such as zinc, aluminum, or magnesium. When they are attached to a metal structure, a galvanic cell is formed. The sacrificial anode sacrifices itself by corroding in place of the metal it is protecting. It's like having a bodyguard for your metal equipment.

02/

Excellent electrochemical performance: Aluminum alloy sacrificial anodes have a suitable electrode potential in seawater, usually between -1.0 and -1.1V (relative to silver/silver chloride electrodes). This potential range ensures that the aluminum anode corrodes preferentially over the hull (mainly steel), thereby protecting the hull from corrosion.

03/

Uniform consumption: Due to the composition and structural design, the aluminum alloy sacrificial anode consumes evenly during operation, ensuring that

04/

Strong self-regulation ability: The aluminum alloy sacrificial anode is able to automatically adjust the output current according to the changes in the hull potential. This self-regulation ability enables it to provide effective protection under different navigation conditions and seawater environments.

05/

Low Maintenance:Once the sacrificial anodes are installed, they require very little maintenance. You just need to check them periodically to see if they've corroded to the point where they need to be replaced. This can usually be done during routine inspections of your marine equipment.

06/

Easy Installation:Another great advantage of marine sacrificial anodes is how easy they are to install. You don't need a team of highly trained engineers to get them up and running. In most cases, they can be simply bolted or welded onto the metal surface that needs protection.

Type of Marine Sacrificial Anode

Aluminum anodes

These anodes are relatively lightweight and are commonly used in freshwater environments.

01

Zinc anodes

Zinc anodes are often used in saltwater environments, as they have a higher potential for cathodic protection than aluminum anodes.

02

Magnesium anodes

Magnesium anodes are used in saltwater environments, as they have a higher potential for cathodic protection than zinc anodes, however are more reactive and have a shorter lifespan.

03

Mixed metal oxide (MMO) anodes

These anodes are typically made from a combination of metals, such as iridium and platinum, and offer a longer lifespan and better performance than traditional aluminum, zinc or magnesium anodes.

04

Hybrid Anodes

Some of them are made of mixed metal oxide coated on a substrate of aluminum or zinc, which combine the best features of both MMO and traditional anodes.

Application of Marine Sacrificial Anode

Ship body

Sacrificial anodes are essential for protecting boat hulls, propellers, shafts, rudders, and other underwater metal parts on both powerboats and sailboats.

Marine engineering facilities

Long-term contact with seawater and soil, complex corrosion conditions. Workpieces can protect steel piles, while zinc alloys are suitable for anti-corrosion of guardrail metal parts to increase service life.

Freshwater lakes and rivers

Metal structures such as bridges and docks need corrosion protection. Zinc alloy anodes have a moderate potential in freshwater environments, which can avoid hydrogen embrittlement caused by excessive potential.

Offshore wind power submarine cables

Aluminum alloy anodes can prevent seawater from corroding the cable's metal sheath, ensuring insulation performance and power transmission safety.

Deep-sea oil well drilling

Facing high-pressure, highly corrosive seawater, zinc anodes can protect key components such as drill pipes and casings, extending equipment

How it works

Whenever there are two different metals physically or electrically connected and in water, they technically become a battery. There will be some amount of current flowing between both metals.

The electrons that make up the current are supplied by one of the metals giving up bits of itself – in the form of metal ions – to the seawater. This is called corrosion, and if left unchecked, will slowly destroy underwater metals on your boat.

The most common victim of corrosion is an aluminum prop on a stainless steel shaft, but struts, rudders, outboards and stern drives are also at risk.

By adding a second metal (an anode which is more noble), an electrical current is established towards the less noble metal which will receive the current allowing the anode to sacrifice itself by an ion transfer.

Determining Which Anode Alloy Is Best for Your Boat

The term anode might be less familiar than the term zinc in the boating industry, mainly because it was the most common material in which anodes were manufactured for many years. Three predominant types of alloy — zinc, aluminum and magnesium — require specific circumstances to function efficiently and offer the utmost protection.

Zinc

Although zinc is preferred, it is not suitable for freshwater and should only be used in saltwater. Zinc is among the best anodes for saltwater. The reaction in saltwater ensures the anode's gradual corrosion so that new zinc layers are consistently exposed to the water until it is completely corroded. Freshwater would inhibit this reaction and produce a layer of zinc over the anode instead of uncovering the zinc through corrosion.

Aluminum

Aluminum is more active and therefore more compatible with different water types than zinc and magnesium. Boats that dock in saltwater and brackish water are more suited to use aluminum anodes. Brackish water is basically a mixture of saltwater and freshwater, where they meet at estuaries or dams. Aluminum is most common in anodes for brackish water. Anodes used in these water types perform well and won't work in freshwater.

Magnesium

There is no in-between with magnesium as it can only be used for freshwater applications, the same way zinc can only be used in saltwater. Due to low salt concentration in freshwater, magnesium is less likely to corrode quickly. The inverse applies when used in saltwater, leading to rapid corrosion because of magnesium's low resistance to salt.

When To Change Your Sacrificial Anode and Other Tips

Regardless of the material you choose for your sacrificial anode, there are certain guidelines you should follow to keep your anodes in good shape and the vital components of your boat protected and corrosion-free:

Replace the anode when about half of its size has been lost to corrosion. If this occurs in less than a year, you may want to increase the size / weight of the anode.

For a zinc anode to work, it must have electrical contact with the metal you are trying to protect. For instance, on the prop shaft right ahead of the prop. If not able to form direct contact, it can be connected by a wire as well.

Never coat an anode with paint or anything else that will cover it; this will render it useless.

Different types of anodes may be used, just don’t intermingle them. For example: Shaft and prop protection is somewhat isolated so a change of anode type is acceptable.

It is essential to make sure the surface under the zinc is bare and bright before the anode is installed. This is to ensure good electrical contact.

Moral of the anode story? It is better to spend the little time and money required to replace the anodes on a regular basis, rather than spending thousands on a new propeller shaft or stern drive.

Sacrificial anode usage time on board

Marine anodes need to be replaced regularly. The replacement frequency will depend on several factors, including the type of anode and the size of the boat. You’ll know when it’s time to replace an anode when it has been visibly reduced in size. Once an anode is about two-thirds its original size, it’s time to replace it. Specific times vary, but, in general, you should consider replacing them annually.

As mentioned, anodes must be replaced regularly to continue providing protection. The benefits of regularly replacing your marine anode include extended hull life, reduced maintenance costs, and improved performance.

Extended hull life: One of the most important benefits of regularly replacing your marine anode is that it extends the life of your hull. By sacrificing itself, the anode protects your hull from corrosion.

Reduced maintenance costs: In addition to extending the life of your hull, replacing your marine anode regularly also reduces maintenance costs. Corrosion can cause severe damage to your boat and prevent it from operating at its best. You can avoid expensive repairs by preventing decay and keeping your boat in top condition.

Improved performance: Regularly replacing your marine anodes can also improve performance. Corrosion can cause all sorts of problems, including electrical and related issues. By replacing your anode regularly, you can ensure that your boat is running at its peak performance.

Replacing your marine anode regularly is essential for protecting your boat and maintaining peak performance. The benefits of doing so are extended hull life, reduced maintenance costs, and improved performance. So be sure to check your anodes regularly and replace them as needed.

TIPS ON MAINTAINING YOUR MARINE ANODE

You must maintain your marine anode to keep your engine operating at its best.

Check for signs of corrosion regularly. You should inspect your anode for any signs of deterioration, such as pitting or flaking. Early detection can help prevent further damage.

Washing down your boat and trailer is also critical. After every use, you should rinse your boat and trailer to remove any salt residue that may have accumulated.

Anodes must stay properly connected to the grounding system of the boat and motor, and be sure to check the wiring and connections regularly to ensure they are secure. Over time, the anode’s conductivity will erode, so it’s essential to replace them periodically.

Precautions for marine sacrificial anodes

Never paint an anode because it will render it useless.

Never paint a component before the anode is installed because it will lose its conductivity.

Don’t add additional anodes to the system – an anode system needs to be planned correctly, and if you have too many anodes it will overprotect, and instead of protecting your components, they will wear away.
